Close to elephants
We had wanted to stay at the Main Camp but because fully booked got allocated the Matyholweni Resort. Upon arrival at the reception a very kind lady found as a Rondavel at the main camp, a last minute change, our chance. It was absolutely excellent. The nearby restaurant very good, outstanding value for money! Want to mention that the very öast day when we wanted to leave the camp, we could not go out of the gate because a huge elephant was standing outside - what adventure! Go and experience for yourself!

Addo elephant accommodation and viewing
Matyholweni acommodation was wonderful - full of atmosphere. Beautifully placed in the bush, screened from neighbours, looking out onto the mountains, it was a night to remember. Although out of the "big game" area, there were still plenty os sightings in this area and it is is not far from the main area. In the main area, we had a super time.

Unspoilt wilderness
Our first pleasent suprise was to find the Matyholweni rest camp so conveniently situated close to the N2. We have been to Addo three times before and coming from Cape Town we dont particularly enjoy the drive thru the industrial area to get to the main camp. Second suprise was how lovely the family cottages were, obviously very new but superbly fitted and we had a great braai outside on the verander. Third suprise was how easy it was to travel on the new internal road to the main Addo park where the big 5 are. It was a short trip where we saw Jackels, Kudu etc and a very good road. We did 3 game drives in the main park two early morning drives and one late afternoon drive and the only disappointment was not seeing any lions. Everyone wants to see lions and my only complaint is the unwillingness of the park rangers to give people an incling of where they are, i am sure they know. We did see two Hyena which was good and obviously millions of elephants. Two days and three drives was perfect and apart from not seeing the lions we had a very happy stay.

Staff were not very knowledgeable when enquiring about guided walks in Addo (walks advertised on web page).

A more senior (and more knowledgeable) person at the main camp confirmed no walks are available...
