Mathyolweni Rest Camp

Mathyolweni Rest Camp

Addo Elephant Park is a place of safety for a vast array of South Africa's wildlife, including the beautiful Big 7, elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, southern right whale and the great white shark.

Hidden away in the thick bushveld of the Park, one can find Mathyolweni Rest camp, a satellite camp located in the new southern wedge near the small town of Colchester. Mathyolweni Rest camp derives it's name from the Xhosa word which means "in the bush", offering peace and tranquility far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. This area does not have elephants yet, but there are plans to re-introduce elephants, buffalo, eland, red hartebeest and possibly black rhino from May 2007.

Mathyolweni Rest camp presents a broad variety of game viewing and outdoor activities, including horse-riding, guided bush walks, game drives, 4x4 trails and serene picnic spots. Nothing could be better if you are a bush lover.

Accommodation at Mathyolweni Rest camp consists of 12 self-catering chalets.

9 cottages which have 2 beds and sleep two people. 3 cottages that have 2 beds which can sleep two people plus a sleeper couch suitable for one or two children. Rooms are cooled by ceiling fans. 2 of the cottages are suitable for people with mobility difficulties, providing ablutions with roll-in showers and grab rails. Fully equipped kitchen with fridge and microwave.

Barbecue Facilities.

Guests can enjoy game viewing from their own vehicle as they journey through prime Wildlife country with a number of lookout points at various waterholes in the region. They can also participate in the guided game drives in open vehicles by day, at sunset or by night, which is the time when the Buffalo and black Rhino are most often sighted.

For the not so feint hearted, one can embark on a walking trail into the heart of the Elephant country with experienced guides.

"Our first pleasent suprise was to find the Matyholweni rest camp so conveniently situated close to the N2. We have been to Addo three times before and coming from Cape Town we dont particularly enjoy the drive thru the industrial area to get to the main camp. Second suprise was how lovely the family cottages were, obviously very new but superbly fitted and we had a great braai outside on the verander. Third suprise was how easy it was to travel on the new internal road to the main Addo park where the big 5 are. It was a short trip where we saw Jackels, Kudu etc and a very good road. We did 3 game drives in the main park two early morning drives and one late afternoon drive and the only disappointment was not seeing any lions. Everyone wants to see lions and my only complaint is the unwillingness of the park rangers to give people an incling of where they are, i am sure they know. We did see two Hyena which was good and obviously millions of elephants. Two days and three drives was perfect and apart from not seeing the lions we had a very happy stay. "
