Tsitsikamma / general information
Tsitsikamma National Park is located at the heart of the Garden Route, Tsitsikamma is a Khoisan word meaning, “place of to much water.” Tsitsikamma National Park incorporates 80 km of rocky coastline with spectacular sea and mountain landscapes, this remote region with secluded valleys is covered by mountain Fynbos and temperate high forests with deep river gorges leading to the ocean. Tsitsikammas spectacular scenery of the Indian Ocean pounding the rocky shores beneath 190 m high cliffs, evergreen forests and fynbos rolling down to the sea in a lush carpet where ancient rivers have sliced their path to the ocean. Tsitsikamma National Park protects a wonderland of inter-tidal and marine life. This is one of the largest Marine Protected Areas in the world, conserving 11 percent of South Africa’s Temperate South Coast rocky shoreline. 30% of the park is covered in fynbos , scattered amongst the forest vegetation, boasting a wide variety of beautiful flowers, including proteas and heath. Several species of forest, fynbos and sea birds are present. Tsitsikamma National Park has several cultural heritage sites of interest, Khoisan caves, shell middens and rock art.
