The Reserve derived its name from the Umpongo River, which features prominently in Xhosa history. According to legend, Nonkosi one of the instigators of the widespread Xhosa suicide attempt lived near the river. It is also said that some of the relics from her kraal can be found at the Reserve.

Accommodation

Accommodation at Mpongo Private Game Reserve consists of a variety of lodges. Firstly, there is the Huberta Lodge. This lodge has a total of 6 rooms, 5 of which are deluxe rooms and one executive room. The lodge also has a sitting room and kitchenette. The River Lodge has a total of 11 rooms. 10 of these rooms are deluxe rooms and one is a suite. This lodge has a dining room, sitting room and a swimming pool. Lastly, there 3 River Lodge chalets, each with 2 bedrooms. The chalets have an inter-leading sitting room each.
