Travelling to South Africa presents foreigners with an amazing plethora of choices in destinations and venues to discover and explore. In recent times, the Eastern Cape has gained in prominence because of its stunning natural beauty, and warm and friendly hospitality. The province’s warmth and radiance often belies its turbulent history of neglect especially and this is none more so evident than at the lovely and serene Kwandwe Private Game Reserve.
Kwandwe is sprawled out on a staggering 54 400 acres of supreme and immaculate terrain and is located within easy distance of a variety of beautiful beaches as well as South Africa’s famous Garden Route. While Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is ensconced in mesmerizing and scintillating views, and the surrounding area is blessed with a rich cultural heritage, restoring the wildlife back to this previously neglected area has been painstaking and laboured. However, the story of the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is one of victory as it is now home to an abundance of animals including the likes of the cheetah, white and black rhino, and buffalo, not to mention the precious Big 5.
Kwandwe is also a sanctuary for the country’s national bird – the endangered blue crane specie; as the name Kwandwe translates from the local Xhosa language to mean ‘Place of the Blue Crane’, it is appropriate that this game reserve would be a haven for these highly rare species. Other birds that visitors can look forward to seeing include the Knysna Woodpecker and Crowned Eagle, along with other endangered species such as the Black-footed Cat, the Cape Grysbok, and the Black Wildebeest. A prominent feature of the Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is the Great Fish River, which runs along 30km through this private and pristine paradise, further enhancing the reserve’s serenity and tranquility.
