Arniston is a quaint fishing village about two centuries old. Arniston is named after the ship "Arniston" when in 1815, of 378 persons on board only six escaped, women and children were washed ashore and what is more, they lay there a whole week before any man knew their fateone of the many ships which got wrecked along this stretch coastline. The Waenhuiskrans which means 'The wagon house cliff' because of the size of the cave, is an alternate name for Arniston. This huge tidal cave was carved out by the sea over centuries is some thing worth while crawling into at low tide.
During winter from May to November, you can view the Southern Right Whales that come to calve in the warm waters off Arniston. The road back to Arniston takes you past the famous De Hoop Nature Reserve. Take a day trip to Cape L'Agulhas, and its famous lighthouse on the southern-most point of the African continent. Enjoy sun tanning on unspoiled white beaches, watching whales breaching in the bay or more active pursuits such as hiking or exploring the countryside. Arniston has something to offer everyone. Arniston and the countryside boasts an impressive array of birds. Bird and day trips or visits to a nearby nature reserve are great.
